Woodworm / Woodboring Insect Infestations

Woodworm infestations are a generic term used to describe woodboring insects that are often found in property. The most common of these insects in the Common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum). The common furniture beetle is found in a large percentage of properties where it is often identified by the small holes left in timber when it pupates into an adult beetle and the piles of frass (sawdust) left behind during this same process. Woodboring insect activity can overtime have a significant affect on the structural strength of timber and specialist treatments are required to eradicate the infestations. Significantly damaged timbers may need to be replaced during these treatments.

Our qualified surveyors can visit your property to provide you with the specialist solutions required to identify the species of woodboring insect, whether the infestation is active and we can provide the required remedial treatment.

Wet Rot

Wet rot is a generic term given to a group of many wood decaying fungi that affect the structural integrity of timber through fungal decay. Wet rots typically affect timbers with a higher moisture content than those affected by dry rot though timbers can be affected by both dry and wet rot. Unlike dry rot, wet rot is often contained to the area where the high moisture content is found and does not readily spread to adjacent timbers unless these are also exposed to the same damp conditions.

The most common signs of wet rot are shrinkage of timbers, timbers that are noticeably soft and a damp / musty smell.

Our qualified surveyors can visit your property to provide you with the specialist solutions required to identify the species of wet rot and we can provide the required remedial treatment including the necessary measures to ensure the timber decay does not reoccur.

Dry Rot

Dry rot (Serpula lacrymans) is a timber decay fungus that can cause extensive damage to timbers within a property. Dry rot often affects concealed timbers such as joists and timber safe lintols that are hidden within wall, roof or floor voids. Dry rot mycelium can grow extensively through masonry and brickwork allowing the growth to spread to adjacent timbers and this can mean outbreaks cover a large area. Often the first visible signs are a brown to red dust settling on surfaces within the property, visible shrinkage of timbers within the property, the appearance of a dry rot fruiting body / mushroom and a musty smell. Like all wood decaying fungi, dry rot requires a source of moisture to germinate the fungal growth and this can be from many sources including defective plumbing, water ingress from roof and rainwater good defects, penetrating damp and timbers in contact with damp masonry.

Our qualified surveyors can visit your property to provide you with the specialist solutions required to ensure the dry rot outbreak is removed and does not reoccur.
